On my own

So this summer I signed a lease to my first apartment. I have never lived alone; I always had at least one roommate or, in one case, 50 roommates (TFJ!). I like the feeling of knowing someone is always around or hearing their noises. Mind you, I do like my alone time…A LOT! However, roommates are there to make you have fun or will be able to find your body if you passed out or died. Kinda dramatic, but that has always been a fear of mine.

Fast forward to now. I am living in my own apartment in a foreign country. Big leap for me! I am lonely, and I would like some companionship, but I realize how much I like the silence. As an only child, I am use to being by myself, but I never thought I would enjoy this kind of solitude. I can walk around naked or listen to music when I wake up in the morning. I have a place to go when I need to get away and reflect.

I think in today’s society, we need social stimulation. If we are not with people, we are scrolling through Facebook or Instagram, or we are chatting on multiple social media sites. I have friends that have FOMO or hate being alone. But what if tried having a few minutes, hours, or even a day alone; like completely alone. No web chatting, no telephone calls, just being completely alone. The depth of reflection or peace would be enlightening. It also creates a sense of independence that i find empowering.

So I challenge you all to try it. Go to a movie or eat at a restaurant by yourself. Meditate. Find moments of solitude.

“Me-time” is with us wherever we go. The only thing that gets in the way of “me-time” is wanting to be somewhere else.”
